“There’s nothing like a good friend who shows up for you…no matter what.
You know the feeling…
When you’re completely overwhelmed…feeling like you’re hanging on by a thread.
And then you get a text from your good friend that reminds you that even though you feel alone…you’re not alone at all.
“I’m thinking about you…are you OK?”
She’s that friend you can call in tears and she’s right there. Listening. No judgment.
That kind of friend doesn’t just make your life better…
She makes you feel safe. Supported. Held.
Like no matter what happens in your life…she’ll always be there for you.
Those kind of friends…they’re everything.
And the truth is…
Those midlife friendships matter more…than they ever have before.
And for me, as a Life Coach for Women Over 50…I didn’t fully realize how much they mattered…until just a couple of weeks ago, when I was on vacation in NYC.
Getting Sick on Vacation
After an amazing girl’s trip out to the beach in Montauk, NY, I planned on ending my trip on a high note in NYC.
I was excited to get together and see girlfriends for good food and fun conversations…
But that got completely squashed when I woke up the next morning…sicker than sick.
Uncontrollable coughing fits, chills, major fatigue and a slight fever.
Normally, I would have thought it’s just the flu…
But not this time.
With a legionnaire’s outbreak in NYC that was spreading, I had all the classic symptoms.
Ugh!
This was not on my vacation bingo card.
Who Will Be There for Me?
As much as I didn’t want to, I had to make an appointment online at urgent care.
While answering all the standard questions about my health and symptoms…
The last question made me take pause and really think about it…
If you are unable to make medical decisions for yourself, you must designate someone to do so for you.
Being alone and single, normally that would be my sister.
The only problem was, she was 3,000 miles away.
So I thought about who my closest friend in NYC was…the one I’d trust to make those type of medical decisions for me.
And for me, it was one of my closest friends for over 20 years, Christie.
She isn’t just a friend, she’s truly my sister from another mother…she’s my chosen family.
My Friends Were There for Me
Since legionnaire’s can be dangerous if it’s not treated early…the protocol is to treat you like you have it, without waiting for the test results.
There is nothing worse than being sick on vacation.
Away from all the comforts of home.
As I lay there, alone and isolated…with no family in town to take care of me.
All my NYC friends, the ones I’ve had for over 22 years, started checking in with me.
“How are you feeling…are you OK?”
“If you need anything…let me know.”
And my friend, Debra who lives in New Jersey with her husband and two sons sent me this text…
“Come stay at my house…we have an extra room. I’ll take care of you.”
Right then, a warm fuzzy feeling washed over me.
I felt loved.
I felt cared for.
And just like that…
I didn’t feel alone anymore.
My good friends were there for me in my time of need.
Why Midlife Friendships Matter More Now Than Ever
Now that I’m finally back in the comforts of my home in California, still recovering…
I’ve had a lot of time to think about how important my friends were to me in my time of need.
Our midlife friendships aren’t just a “nice-to-have”.
They’re literally everything.
Because the good friends we have now…are the ones who will show up for us when we need them most.
They’re the ones who will drop everything when you need them.
They’re the ones who check in.
The ones who remind us we’re never really doing life alone.
Because that’s what real friends do.
And that’s exactly why it matters more than ever now.
It’s Never Too Late to Reconnect
Now, maybe you’re reading this thinking…
“That sounds wonderful, Suzanne…but I’ve lost touch with some of my closest friends.”
Maybe life got busy…
Maybe the calls got fewer and further between.
Maybe you don’t know how it happened…but the friendship slowly faded away.
And now you find yourself, really missing that friend.
If that’s you, I promise you…
Those midlife friendships aren’t gone.
They’re not lost forever.
Trust me, they’re not!
Those friendships are just waiting to be revived.
Because here’s the beautiful thing that I discovered about all my friendships…
You can always pick up right where you left off…no matter how much time has passed.
All it takes is…
One text. One phone call. One “I’ve been thinking about you…”
And that connection and friendship you thought you lost?
It comes right back to life.
Reconnecting Is Just the Beginning
Reaching out initially, is just the beginning…
The real magic of a rekindled friendship comes with time.
Your friendship grows closer when you keep showing up for each other.
Not once or twice. But again and again.
It’s texting her just to say you’re thinking of her.
It’s calling to see how she’s doing…for no reason at all.
It’s asking her to grab lunch, or coffee, or dinner…just because.
It’s picking up the phone when you know she’s going through something.
And really listening…when she’s in the thick of it.
It’s asking, “what do you need?”…when she could use a hand.
None of it is complicated or too much to ask.
It’s just showing up.
Consistently.
With your whole heart.
Through all the messy, wonderful ups and downs of midlife.
And here’s the beautiful part…
The way you show up for your friends…is exactly the way they’ll show up for you.
That’s what real friendship is.
A two-way street of love, care, and showing up.
It’s how a trusted friend becomes your chosen family.
That’s why my friends rallied around me when I was sick on vacation in NYC.
Because that’s the kind of friend I’ve always been to them.
And when I needed them…they were right there for me.
