Let’s be honest about something…
Making new friends as an adult isn’t easy.
Yep…there I said it.
It used to be easier when we were younger.
We had automatic friends through college, work, and friends of friends.
We didn’t have to try hard…the friendships just kind of happened.
It was simple.
Then midlife changed everything…and our lives were turned upside down with all the big life changes.
With retirement around the corner. The kids are grown and gone. The loss of parents. Or a few friends have moved away.
And now that you have a little more free time on your hands…
All of a sudden you realize your friend group shrunk when you weren’t looking.
Some friendships drifted. Some you had to let go of. And some moved on…and that’s OK.
But that’s when you realize…you need to start making new friends.
But admitting that feels strange. Because you never really had to do this before. And maybe it feels a little scary.
But guess what?
It doesn’t have to be.
Here’s the Secret Most Women Never Realize
You don’t have to do anything big or brave to make a new friend.
You don’t have to be super outgoing.
You don’t have to join the perfect group or walk into a room full of people and introduce yourself to everyone.
But what you do need to do is…open up your energy and be willing to talk to a stranger.
I know, I know…
We were always told when we were little not to talk to strangers…but that’s the scary kind of stranger.
As an adult, if you want to make new friends you gotta talk to someone you don’t know…a good kind of stranger.
That’s it.
Now while that may feel overwhelming or intimidating especially if you’re shy…just remember your ‘why‘.
Why do you want to make new friends?
So you have friends to do things with.
So you have friends to talk to.
So you have friends who are there for you through all the ups and downs of midlife.
And that’s also my why…so I make it a point to talk to strangers all the time.
And guess what?
A lot of those good kind of strangers…have become friends.
So let me share with you what I mean.
One Run. One Corner. One Conversation.
A few months ago, I was out for a run in my neighborhood.
Same loop I’ve done a hundred times. After my run, I always like to walk back home to cool down.
On my way back, I stopped at the corner and waited for the light to change to cross the street to my apartment.
That’s when a woman who was walking in the same direction as me said, “you look tired.”
I was. I’d just run a couple of miles.
We crossed the street together and kept chatting about running, as she used to be a runner, too…but had to stop running because of her injuries.
Turned out we lived in the very same complex, but had never met.
When we got to my apartment, instead of just parting ways and saying nice to meet you…we kept talking and were really enjoying our conversation.
When Cindy found out that I had moved to Newport Beach just a few years ago, she invited me to join a newcomers group for women that she belongs to that does different social activities together.
I gave her my phone number so she could send me the info.
Not only did she send me the info, she has invited me out to join her in various activities in the neighborhood.
And guess what?
We’re still friends today.
To think…none of this would have happened if we didn’t talk to each other waiting to cross the street.
One run. One corner. One conversation.
That’s all it took.
Here’s why I’m telling you this…
I wasn’t doing something that was out of my comfort zone, I was just out and about doing something I love.
And I was open and friendly when a complete stranger said something to me.
That’s all I needed…the door opened to a conversation…and I ran with it.
No pun intended…LOL!
As a Life Coach for Women Over 50, this is exactly what I help women in midlife do…make new connections, build genuine friendships, and thrive in this next chapter together.
And it almost always starts with one simple thing…just opening the door to a conversation.
So let me break down exactly how you can do the same thing, so you can make new friends where you live.
How to Make New Friends by Talking to Strangers
Open Up Your Energy First
Here’s something you might not realize.
You send non-verbal signals without ever saying a word.
When you’re closed off, people feel it.
Eyes down. Earphones in. Phone out. Arms crossed.
All that screams, “please don’t bother me.”
People pick up on that signal…to leave you alone.
Cindy walked right up to me because I made eye contact with her right when she walked up and something about me said I was open.
I smiled and answered her question…and continued the conversation.
That’s all it takes to open the door.
So before you worry about what to say…just work on being open.
Put the phone away.
Make eye contact.
Smile.
Let your energy say “I’m friendly” before anything comes out of your mouth.
Because like attracts like. When you put out warm, open energy…you draw warm, open women right to you.
Be Willing to Talk to Everyone and Anyone
I know…if you’re shy or an introvert, it can be scary talking to complete strangers.
Believe it or not, I used to be super shy when I was younger. And I’m actually an introvert…but I’m a friendly outgoing introvert (yes, that’s really possible).
So if I can do it…you can too!
Just don’t make it a big deal.
Take the pressure off yourself.
You don’t need a clever line. You don’t need to be the most outgoing woman in the room.
You just need to say one simple thing.
Remember…”You look tired” is literally how my conversation started with Cindy and me. That’s it.
So ask someone a question about where something is.
Make a comment about the weather.
Say something about where you both are.
Or a simple compliment, “I love your bag, where did you get it?”
It can literally be anything happening right in front of you in the present moment.
That tiny opening is all you need.
One small comment is the door…and you just walk through it.
Because here’s the truth…
If you don’t say something, you may be missing out on making a new friend.
Look for “Me Too!” Moments
Once the conversation gets rolling, here’s where the real connection happens.
Keep sharing with each other.
The more you talk, and the more you listen, the more you get to know each other…and the more you’ll start to have what I call “me too!” moments.
She mentions she just moved here. Me too!
She says her kids just left for college. Me too!
She loves to hike, or just started yoga, or can’t cook to save her life. Me too!
Those little “me too!” moments are real connection points.
That’s when you both realize…oh, you get it and you’re just like me.
That’s exactly what happened on the corner with Cindy. We kept talking. We found out we lived in the same complex. We had more in common than we ever would have guessed.
The connection points were already there. I just had to keep the conversation going long enough to find them.
So don’t rush. Don’t force it. Stay curious. Ask another question. And don’t forget to share about yourself.
Every “me too!” moment is another thread tying the two of you together.
Then Take the Easy Next Step
When the conversation is flowing and it feels mutual…trust me, you’ll feel it…don’t let her walk away as a stranger.
Take that one small step that turns a nice chat into a real connection.
Something easy like…
“I’m really enjoying our conversation…we should exchange numbers.”
Or tie it to whatever you were just talking about:
“If you ever want to grab a coffee or go for a walk sometime, let me know. I’ll give you my number.”
No big speech. No pressure. Just one warm, simple line.
I’ve done this so many times, and everyone I’ve met has said yes.
But if for some reason, she does say no (which I highly doubt)…you’ll be just fine.
Just be proud of yourself…
You opened your energy, you talked to someone new, and you got a little braver for the next time.
Keep practicing with new people everywhere and anywhere you go.
You Can Make New Friends At Any Age
If you take away one thing, let it be this.
You can make new friends at any age.
You really can.
You don’t have to force yourself into something big and scary.
You just have to open up your energy…be willing to talk to a stranger…and look for those “me too!” moments.
That’s the whole thing.
I’m living proof. I built a new friend circle in my new city because I talk to everyone and anyone.
And those strangers…well, they’re no longer strangers, they’re my friends.
If I can do it…so can you.
Your Turn to Open the Door
So here’s what I encourage you to do this week.
The next time you’re out doing something you love…running, in line for coffee, walking your dog through the park…put your phone away.
Make eye contact with someone and smile.
And just say one small thing to one stranger.
That’s it. That’s the whole first step.
You might walk away with nothing but a nice chat. Or you might walk away with a new friend and an invitation you never expected.
Either way, you’ll be braver than you were the day before…and rinse and repeat the next day.
Get into a daily practice of opening up your energy and talking to one new person a day…see where it leads.
Maybe you make someone’s day.
Maybe it’s just a nice conversation.
Or maybe it’s a new friend!
